Home Vet Frequently Asked Questions

Home Vet Frequently Asked Questions

Can a vet treat my pet at home instead of a clinic or hospital?

Yes. VETaround offers consultations, assessments, testing and ongoing support from home. This allows your pet to stay in a familiar environment, which often makes handling calmer and more controlled. We provide in-home vet care to the Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, and Lower North Shore of Sydney.

Where more complex diagnostics or surgery are required, these are performed in a sterile hospital setting.

What at-home vet services can be provided during a visit?

VETaround provides a broad range of veterinary care in your home, including health checks, vaccinations, parasite management, and medical assessments. Blood tests and other pathology can be arranged during the consult, with samples sent to commercial labs for proper analysis. Full physical examinations and ongoing condition management are also handled at home, where pets are often calmer and easier to assess.

Care is delivered with a strong clinical focus, not just convenience. Where appropriate, medications can be provided during the visit, so there is no need to organise them separately.

Can the vet do blood tests at my home?

Yes. Blood collection can be done during the consult, with samples sent to commercial laboratories for proper analysis. This allows testing to be started immediately without needing to visit another location.

Is ultrasound available during a home consultation?

In some cases, ultrasound can be performed in the home, depending on the pet and the situation. It is used when it can be done safely and without adding stress.

What if my pet needs hospital-based tests or treatment?

If your pet requires procedures or care that cannot be done safely at home, this is arranged through a hospital setting. This may include surgery, more advanced imaging, or treatments that require specific equipment.

All pre- and post-procedure care is managed within the same service, ensuring continuity in your pet’s treatment. The goal is to keep care consistent, even when it moves between home and hospital.

How does in-home vet care reduce stress for pets?

Pets remain in their own environment, without travel, waiting rooms, or unfamiliar smells. This often results in calmer behaviour and allows for more controlled handling during the consult.

Can vets handle anxious or difficult pets at home?

Yes. Many pets that struggle in clinic settings are easier to manage at home. The combination of a familiar environment and calm handling helps reduce escalation. Dr Ari and his team are also experienced in handling animals that struggle with fear and anxiety.

Do I need to help hold my pet during the vet consult?

In most cases, no. The team manages positioning and handling, allowing you to stay focused on your pet rather than trying to control them.

Are medications provided during a home vet consult?

Yes. Common medications are carried in the vehicle and can be dispensed during the consult, where appropriate. This avoids needing to visit a pharmacy afterwards.

Can repeat pet medications be delivered to my home?

Yes. Ongoing medications can often be delivered, provided you live within our areas of care, which include the Inner West, Eastern Suburbs and the Lower North Shore.

What if my pet needs surgery or more advanced care?

While we try to have the majority of consultations and follow-ups within your home, if required, care will transition to a hospital setting. This ensures more complex procedures are handled in the right environment while maintaining continuity of care.

Can my pets dental problems be assessed at home?

Initial dental checks can be done during a vet home visit. If treatment is needed, this is planned and carried out in an appropriate hospital setting.

Is in-home care suitable for older pets?

Yes. Older pets often benefit from being assessed at home, where movement, stress, and transport are reduced. This can make examinations more accurate and less disruptive while maintaining the animal’s comfort.

Can you help manage my pet's long-term or chronic conditions?

Yes. Ongoing conditions can be monitored and managed through regular home visits, with adjustments made based on your pet’s response over time.

What if my pet needs further testing after the visit?

If additional diagnostics are required, they are arranged based on the findings. This may include further imaging, lab work, or referral where appropriate.

Can euthanasia be done at home, and what does the process involve?

Yes. Euthanasia can be performed in the home, allowing your pet to remain in a familiar and controlled environment. This often reduces stress and creates a more settled setting for both the pet and the family.

The process is handled carefully and respectfully, with time given for you to be present and involved as much as you choose. Afterwards, arrangements for your pet are organised based on your preferences, including cremation or other options.

Do you cover all areas of Sydney?

The service focuses on selected inner and eastern areas of Sydney, including Marrickville, Waverley, Randwick, Woollahra, Botany Bay, City of Sydney, and parts of the Lower North Shore. Coverage is intentionally defined to allow appointments to be managed reliably and to maintain continuity of care.

If you’re unsure whether your suburb is included, please don’t hesitate to contact us, and we would be happy to confirm.

Why choose a mobile vet instead of a clinic visit?

For many pets, especially anxious, older, or difficult-to-transport animals, home visits allow for calmer handling and more controlled care. It also removes the need for travel while maintaining a high standard of clinical assessment.

What happens if my pet has an after-hours emergency?

Consultations are available during extended daytime hours, and you can speak directly with the vet up until the end of the working day. If the issue can be managed at home, a visit may be arranged where appropriate.

For true emergencies that require immediate hospital care, you will be directed to a 24-hour emergency facility. This ensures your pet receives the level of care needed without delay.

Can you help if my dog’s behaviour is difficult or unpredictable?

Many behavioural challenges can be assessed during a home visit, particularly where anxiety or the environment plays a role. Being in the home often allows for a more accurate understanding of what is happening.

Where more specific behavioural work is needed, referral to a dedicated behaviour professional may be recommended. If that is the case, guidance is provided to help you determine the next step.

Can a vet visit if I am not home?

In most cases, it is preferred that you are present so a full history can be discussed and decisions can be made properly. This is particularly important for new clients or more serious concerns.

Once an ongoing relationship is established, there may be situations where a visit can proceed without you present. This depends on the nature of the consult and what is required for safe and appropriate care.
