Desexing is one of the most common surgical procedures for dogs, cats and rabbits. At VETaround, we make the process as calm, clear and well-managed as possible.
While most of our care is delivered in the home, desexing is performed in our trusted partner hospital, where your pet has access to the facilities, anaesthesia monitoring and surgical support needed for safe, high-quality care.
Our role is not just to perform the procedure. It is to guide you through the process clearly, reduce stress where possible, and ensure your pet is well cared for before, during, and after surgery.
Desexing may be recommended for dogs, cats, rabbits, and other pets, depending on their age, breed, health status, and lifestyle.
For many pets, desexing offers important health and welfare benefits. It prevents unwanted litters and reduces the risk of some reproductive diseases. In females, it lowers the risk of pyometra. In males, desexing helps prevent testicular disease. It can also support long-term health management. The right timing varies. We will advise you based on your pet rather than giving a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
For some pets, keyhole desexing may be an option. For some pets, keyhole desexing may be an option.
It is not the right option for every animal. If you would like to know whether keyhole desexing is suitable for your pet, we can talk you through the pros, limitations and alternatives.
This minimally invasive technique may offer benefits such as smaller incisions and less tissue trauma, and a more comfortable recovery in some cases.
Most Vetaround consultations take place at your home. Desexing is different because it is a surgical procedure and needs a proper hospital environment.
Your pet’s desexing is done at our partner hospital in Double Bay. There, we offer a sterile surgical environment, anaesthetic monitoring, pre-operative assessment, and appropriate pain relief. After surgery, we can also closely watch your pet as they recover.
This way, your pet receives the benefits of a proper surgical facility while still being cared for by a team that values calm handling, clear communication, and ongoing care.

We aim to make the process straightforward.
Before Surgery
Before your pet’s procedure, we will talk you through the plan, fasting instructions and admission details. In some cases, we may recommend pre-operative blood testing or other checks depending on your pet’s age and health.
On The Day
Desexing is usually booked as a day procedure. Admission is generally arranged in the morning. If transport is difficult, we may be able to help with pickup arrangements depending on the case and location.
After Surgery
Your pet will be monitored closely after the procedure and, in most cases, will go home the same day. We will provide discharge instructions, pain relief where needed, and guidance on wound care, rest and recovery.
Good surgery is only part of the job. Good aftercare matters too.
After desexing, we will ensure you know how to care for the wound and which activities and restrictions are required. We’ll explain what signs are normal after surgery, when to contact us, and book you in for a follow-up appointment.
If you have any concerns during recovery, please contact us. We would rather answer questions early than miss problems.
In-home care forms the foundation of how we treat and manage your pet’s health. Most conditions can be assessed, treated, and monitored in a familiar environment where pets are calmer and easier to handle. Available to residents of Sydney’s inner city, Inner West, Eastern Suburbs and the Lower North Shore.
First visit from Ari and Ellie and it went beyond all expectations. They were so genuinely interested in my two cats. Of course I couldn’t stop talking about them but they clearly were not bored. Did excellent health checks and vaccinations – was an absolute pleasure and I would totally recommend them to anybody. So fabulous having no stress of lugging…
Elle’s exceptionally professional, warm, and helpful phone manner, together with Dr Ari’s prompt arrival, gentle approach with Hudson, and clear, thorough medical explanations and recommendations, immediately put my mind at ease. The high level of care and professionalism demonstrated confirmed that contacting VETaround was the right decision.
Ari is the best vet ever. His home visits are incredible. Such a great service to not have to put your beloved pets in the stressful situation of a car. Or around sick pets in a waiting area. My cats LOVE HIM. Ollie my male cat NEVER comes out of hiding when visitors come over. With Ari, he not only came out, let him weigh him, have his check up done…
I was very pleased with the ladies from VETaround Mobile vet. Professional, polite and very knowledgeable. Certainly eased my mind about my cat 🐈 would recommend them to anyone needing good veterinary care for their pet. We all know just how important our four legged friends are!
Desexing is a surgical procedure that requires a sterile environment, anaesthetic monitoring, and appropriate recovery support. While VETaround provides most care in the home, the desexing procedure itself is performed at a partner hospital to maintain clinical standards and safety. This approach allows your pet to benefit from both high-quality surgery and a calmer, well-managed overall experience.
Desexing with a mobile vet service involves a combination of in-home consultation and hospital-based surgery. VETaround manages assessment, planning, and aftercare from your home. However, the procedure itself is performed in a fully equipped surgical setting. This model supports continuity of care and reduces unnecessary stress around the process.
The timing of desexing depends on factors such as breed, size, sex, and overall health. Some pets may benefit from earlier desexing, while others may require a more tailored approach based on development or medical considerations. A consultation helps determine the appropriate timing rather than applying a standard recommendation.
Before desexing, you will receive guidance on fasting, admission, and any recommended pre-operative checks. After the procedure, most pets return home the same day with instructions covering wound care, activity restriction, and recovery expectations. Ongoing support is part of the process, particularly if anything during recovery seems unusual.
Keyhole desexing may be available for some pets, depending on suitability and clinical factors. This technique involves smaller incisions and can support a more comfortable recovery in certain cases. It is not appropriate for every animal, so suitability needs to be assessed individually.
Most pets undergoing desexing return home on the same day after recovering from anaesthesia. Discharge is based on stability, comfort, and the ability to safely continue recovery at home. In some cases, additional monitoring may be recommended depending on the individual situation.
VETaround is designed for pets that are difficult to manage in a clinic, and for owners who want a higher standard of care delivered properly at home. Every visit is carried out by a vet and nurse team, so you’re not left trying to hold your pet while decisions are being made.
