Vet Dentistry

Dental disease is one of the most common health issues we see, and it is often missed until it is advanced. It affects comfort and eating and can lead to broader health problems if left untreated.

A proper dental plan starts with early assessment and, when needed, moves to treatment in a controlled hospital setting.

How Dental Care Works With VETaround

We manage dental care in two stages.

In-Home Dental Assessment
Your pet’s dental health can be checked during a home visit. This allows us to examine the mouth in a calm, familiar environment and identify early signs of tartar build-up, infection, or discomfort.

Where needed, an additional team member assists during the consult. This means your pet can be handled safely and calmly, without you needing to hold or restrain them.

In-Hospital Dental Treatment
If treatment is required, this is performed in our hospital.

Dental procedures such as scale and polish or tooth removal require general anaesthesia, proper monitoring and dedicated dental equipment.

This allows us to thoroughly clean and properly assess each tooth and remove any that are infected or causing pain.

This approach ensures your pet receives the right level of care at each stage.

Why Dental Health Matters

Tartar builds up quickly in pets. Bacteria then collect beneath it, leading to infection and periodontal disease.

Over time, this can cause damage to the gums and supporting bone, tooth loss and ongoing pain and discomfort.

In some cases, infection can spread beyond the mouth and contribute to more serious health issues. Once advanced, dental disease cannot be reversed. Early detection and regular checks make a significant difference.

Ongoing Dental Care Plan

Maintaining dental health requires a structured approach.

A typical plan includes:

  • Annual or biannual dental assessments.
  • Dental scale and polish as needed (performed in hospital under anaesthetic).
  • A home care plan to help manage plaque build-up between visits.

Some pets maintain good dental health with minimal intervention. Others develop problems early and require closer monitoring.

Anaesthetic Safety

Dental procedures require a general anaesthetic. This allows a full and safe examination of the mouth and proper treatment.

The anaesthetics and monitoring equipment used are considered safe in healthy patients, and risks are carefully managed.

Practical Advice On Home Care

Home care plays a role, but it needs to be realistic.

Some commonly used approaches, such as feeding bones, come with risks, including broken teeth and gut obstruction.

We can guide you on appropriate dental care options based on your pet’s needs.

In-Home Services

In-home care forms the foundation of how we treat and manage your pet’s health. Most conditions can be assessed, treated, and monitored in a familiar environment where pets are calmer and easier to handle. Available to residents of Sydney’s inner city, Inner West, Eastern Suburbs and the Lower North Shore.

Ari is the best vet ever. His home visits are incredible. Such a great service to not have to put your beloved pets in the stressful situation of a car. Or around sick pets in a waiting area. My cats LOVE HIM. Ollie my male cat NEVER comes out of hiding when visitors come over. With Ari, he not only came out, let him weigh him, have his check up done…

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a vet do dental checks at home?

Yes. A dental assessment can be done during an in-home consult, allowing early signs of dental disease to be identified without the stress of travel. If further treatment is needed, it is carried out in hospital, where the necessary equipment and anaesthetic support are available.

Why does my pet need to go to hospital for dental treatment?

Procedures like scale and polish or tooth removal require a general anaesthetic and specialised equipment. These are only safely performed in a controlled hospital environment, not during a home visit.

How often should my pet have a dental check?

A dental assessment is generally recommended once a year. Some pets may need checks more often, depending on how quickly tartar builds up or if they are prone to dental disease.

What happens during a pet dental procedure?

Dental procedures involve cleaning tartar, assessing each tooth, and removing any that are infected or beyond saving. This is done under anaesthetic to allow a thorough and safe treatment.

Are dental anaesthetics safe for pets?

Modern anaesthetics and monitoring equipment are considered very safe in healthy patients. The risks of untreated dental disease are often higher than the risks associated with a properly managed anaesthetic.
