Home Vet Blood Tests, Lump Tests & Ultrasound

When something is not right with your pet, the next step is understanding why.

Examination alone is not always enough. In many cases, further testing is needed to get a clear picture of what is going on.

At VETaround, blood tests, lump checks, and ultrasounds are used to support accurate diagnosis. Where appropriate, these can be carried out during an in-home consultation, reducing delays and allowing care to move forward without unnecessary steps.

When Further Testing Is Needed

Testing is recommended when there is a reason for it.

This may be a new lump, a change in behaviour, an ongoing illness, or findings during a routine health check. The aim is to answer a specific question, not to run tests without purpose.

A structured consultation comes first. From there, decisions are made about whether further investigation is required.

Blood Tests

Blood testing provides information about how your pet’s body is functioning.

It is commonly used to assess organ health, detect underlying disease, and monitor ongoing conditions. In older pets, routine monitoring often includes identifying changes early.

Where blood testing is needed, samples can be collected during the consult. This allows the process to start immediately without arranging a separate visit.

Lump Checks

Finding a lump can be concerning, but not all lumps are serious.

The first step is a proper examination. From there, further testing may be recommended to understand what the lump is and whether it needs treatment.

This approach avoids guesswork. Decisions are based on evidence rather than appearance alone.

"Ari came to our home, took his time, and didn’t make us feel rushed at all. He also gave us some really helpful advice for managing the examination and vaccination of our anxious cat. Easily the best experience we’ve had with our anxious cat! Would definitely recommend."

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is used to assess internal structures that cannot be evaluated through a physical examination, including organs and soft tissues.

It may be used to investigate symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, or unexplained changes, and can also assist in situations like pregnancy checks. In some cases, it helps clarify findings from other tests or identify issues such as fluid or organ changes.

When appropriate, ultrasound can be performed at home, allowing further assessment without moving your pet into a clinic environment.

Calm Handling In A Familiar Environment

Diagnostics rely on being able to properly examine and handle your pet.

Consults are carried out in your home, where most pets are more relaxed and easier to assess. Removing the stress of travel and a clinic environment often improves cooperation during testing.

When needed, an additional team member assists to ensure your pet is positioned safely and without stress. You are not required to restrain your pet, which helps keep the process controlled and reduces the risk of escalation in anxious or uncomfortable animals.

Clear Next Steps After Testing

Once testing is completed, the results are used to guide what happens next.

This may involve treatment, monitoring, or further investigation, depending on the findings. Decisions are based on what is actually happening with your pet, not assumptions.

Medications can be provided during the consult where needed, allowing care to begin without delay and keeping the process straightforward.

In-Home Services

In-home care forms the foundation of how we treat and manage your pet’s health. Most conditions can be assessed, treated, and monitored in a familiar environment where pets are calmer and easier to handle. Available to residents of Sydney’s inner city, Inner West, Eastern Suburbs and the Lower North Shore.

Ari is the best vet ever. His home visits are incredible. Such a great service to not have to put your beloved pets in the stressful situation of a car. Or around sick pets in a waiting area. My cats LOVE HIM. Ollie my male cat NEVER comes out of hiding when visitors come over. With Ari, he not only came out, let him weigh him, have his check up done…

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a vet do blood tests during a home consultation?

Yes, blood tests can often be performed during a home consultation. Samples are collected during the visit, eliminating the need for a separate appointment. This allows the diagnostic process to start immediately.

What should I do if I find a lump on my pet?

If you find a lump, it should be assessed rather than monitored indefinitely. A consultation allows the vet to examine the lump and decide if further testing is needed. This ensures decisions are based on evidence rather than guesswork.

Are lump checks enough to tell if it is cancer?

No, a lump cannot be diagnosed solely on appearance. Further testing is usually required to understand what it represents. This may involve sample collection or additional diagnostics.

When is an ultrasound used for pets?

Ultrasound is used to assess internal structures such as organs and soft tissues, often when a pet has symptoms that need further investigation or when other tests are inconclusive. It can also be used for pregnancy checks and to help investigate issues like abdominal pain, vomiting, or changes in behaviour.

It provides real-time imaging that helps guide diagnosis and next steps in a controlled, non-invasive manner.

Will my anxious pet tolerate blood tests with a home vet?

Many anxious pets cope better at home than in a clinic, as a familiar environment helps reduce stress. This often makes procedures like blood collection more manageable.

At VETaround, we are experienced in handling anxious and difficult pets, using a calm, controlled approach. This allows blood tests to be performed safely while minimising distress as much as possible.
