Common orthopaedic issues in pets

While arthritis tends to develop in senior pets, orthopaedic problems can affect dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals at any age. Orthopaedic issues can be a genetic trait in some breeds, or they may be triggered by obesity, poor nutrition, an accident or illness.

Potential orthopaedic problems include:

  • Arthritis
  • Bone disease
  • Fractures and broken bones
  • Hip and elbow dysplasia (abnormal development of either the hip or elbow joint)
  • Back or knee trauma
  • Cruciate ligament injury (a tear or rupture in the ligament that connects the back of the femur – the bone above the knee – with the front of the tibia – the bone below the knee).

Pet orthopaedic surgery

Pet orthopaedic diagnosis and treatment will involve a full physical examination, including radiology, ultrasound or an endoscopy to fully visualise the state of your pet’s joints and bones. Treatment is based around the underlying cause. In the case of a fracture, tumour or some other problems, your pet will need surgery.

Orthopaedic surgery for pets is common, and our orthopaedic vet will speak to you to explain why it’s needed, what’s involved and what to expect afterwards. We’ll provide you with a discharge pack that includes full details on post-operative care.

Generally, you will need to restrict your pet’s activity for weeks or perhaps months to help them recover fully.

Our home-visit vet will schedule follow-up consultations to ensure your pet is recovering well. As we’re a fully mobile vet in Sydney, we can come to you and provide our consultation in the comfort of your own home. It’s a good option for busy families, anyone with easy transport… and recovering animals!

Arthritis

Arthritis is common in ageing pets. It’s a chronic and often painful condition that can also affect your pet’s ability to move. If you have noticed any changes in the way your pet walks or runs, we will recommend a full examination and gait analysis.

If our mobile vet confirms your dog, cat or other pet has arthritis, there are several treatment options.

Our vet might prescribe anti-inflammatories and joint supplements or suggest a natural treatment such as acupuncture to help alleviate your pet’s pain.

There are also some simple steps you can take to help with orthopaedic issues or post-operative care, which include providing an orthopaedic bed to cushion joints, slip-proofing your home with area rugs or even skid-proof socks for your dog, keeping nails trimmed (another anti-slip tactic), providing ramps if possible and maintaining a comfortable temperature inside.
