Acupuncture for pets

Veterinary care is always evolving, and one area that many of our customers are now looking to is acupuncture for pets.

Acupuncture is a natural therapy that’s commonly used by humans as part of a holistic approach to health care. Over the past few decades, it’s become popular as a treatment for dogs, cats and horses.

It may be beneficial for a variety of issues, including arthritis, asthma, seizures and perhaps even behavioural problems.

About acupuncture for pets

Acupuncture is an ancient healthcare technique, widely believed to have originated in China.

The practice involves inserting very fine needles into points in the skin that correspond with vein, artery and nerve pathways.

Practitioners believe that by stimulating these points, we can help improve blood flow to various organs, speed up the healing process and reduce pain and inflammation.

Practitioners use single-use sterile needles, which generally feel like a pin prick when inserted, with a tingling that may last a minute or two but eases quite quickly. They leave the needles in for a short period before removal. The entire process is very safe.

How acupuncture treatments work

If you are interested in acupuncture, our Sydney mobile vet will first have a consultation with you and examine your pet to confirm if acupuncture is suitable for your animal.

Acupuncture is not a stand-alone treatment, and your dog or cat – or any other pet – will need several sessions. We work with a qualified veterinary acupuncturist who may start with one or two treatments a week, then reduce them to fortnightly or even monthly. Many of our customers report improvements in their pets within the first few weeks.

Many animals respond really well to acupuncture, and some even relax so much they fall asleep during sessions. They may also be sleepy after the session, which is perfectly normal.

While it is an ancient technique, acupuncture for pets is still a new discovery for many of our customers.  Contact us and our  Sydney mobile vet will be more than happy to talk to you about acupuncture or naturopathy for your furry friend!
