Pet Endoscopy

While VETaround prides itself on exceptional home vet care, we don’t stop there. As we partner with a base hospital, our mobile vet can perform a full range of hospital treatments, including endoscopy.

Pet endoscopy is a procedure that allows us to examine your pet’s respiratory tract and lower gastrointestinal tract… without invasive surgery.

It’s common, safe and an effective diagnostic tool for our VETaround pets.

Why endoscopy

Why endoscopy?

While our home-visit vet can perform physical examinations and annual health checks in the comfort of your own home, we may sometimes recommend pet endoscopy so that we can understand just what is causing certain symptoms in your dog or cat.

These symptoms might include vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite and abdominal swelling or pain.

A pet endoscopy may uncover a tumour, or quite often, a gastrointestinal issue. Sometimes we may need an additional biopsy to confirm a diagnosis.

Understanding pet endoscopy

Understanding pet endoscopy

An endoscopy is a tube with a tiny camera attached, that our vet inserts into your pet via the mouth or colon. It provides a video image that we view on an adjacent screen and closely examine for any abnormalities.

To prepare for an endoscopy, we will ask that you ensure your pet fasts for 12 to 24 hours prior to the procedure so that the intestinal tract is completely clear. If we need to examine the colon, your pet may also need oral medicine prior to the day of treatment, to remove all faecal matter.

Endoscopy is a day procedure, so we will either meet you at our base hospital in Double Bay or pick up your pet from home in the morning. Your pet will be back home with you safe and sound the same day.

As with any unusual signs and symptoms, it’s very important to get in touch with us if your pet is vomiting, has diarrhoea or a sudden loss of appetite. They may not need an endoscopy in every situation, but they will need a thorough assessment.
