Understanding pet ageing
Pets’ lives are much shorter than ours and they can reach their geriatric years in what seems no time at all. How quickly depends on breed and species. Where a large breed dog might start to become geriatric aged eight, for instance, an eight-year old cat is in the prime of their life.
Once your pet does start to show signs of ageing, it’s important to stay on top of all their health needs. And that’s why it’s also vital to recognise the signs of ageing. These can include:
- slowing down on walks
- grey hairs on the face
- stiffness after lying down
- loss of hearing (although this can be selective!)
- poor eyesight
- becoming more clingy.
Our annual health checks
Your pet’s annual health check is the ideal time to chat to our mobile vet about any changes you are noticing in your pet’s appearance, movements or behaviour.
Each annual health check involves a complete physical examination and general health evaluation by our mobile vet. If we do uncover any issues, we can assess and consider treatment options.
We give you all the information and support so you can be confident you are providing your pet with everything they need to stay comfortable and content in their older years.
Comprehensive geriatric care
Our mobile vet can provide a tailored geriatric care program for your pet, and because we partner with a base hospital, we can look after their every need as they age. Our comprehensive geriatric care includes:
- Annual or biannual complete physical examination, including weight management, dental hygiene, skin and coat condition, bone and joint health
- Annual urine and faecal testing
- Annual blood screening for general health and organ function
- Prophylactic medicine program, including flea and tick control, intestinal worm control, heartworm prevention and vaccinations
- Complementary medicine services such as acupuncture and naturopathy (in association with a qualified veterinary acupuncturist and naturopath).
Our pets bring us so much joy, and it’s up to us to help them live healthy and happy lives for as long as possible.
